By most rational accountings, Jon Jones is the greatest mixed martial artist who ever lived. The youngest champion in UFC history at 23, a light heavyweight reign that consumed an entire generation of contenders — Shogun Rua, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Daniel Cormier — and then, after a three-year layoff, a heavyweight title won in two minutes.

His 28-1 record contains no true defeat: the lone 'loss' is a 2009 disqualification for illegal elbows in a fight he was dominating. Across 17 years, nobody has ever convincingly beaten him for a full round, let alone a full fight.

The genius was always adaptability. Jones out-wrestled wrestlers, out-struck strikers, and invented angles — the oblique kick, the spinning elbow — that the sport had to learn to defend because of him. The chaos outside the cage cost him years and public goodwill; inside it, he never had a bad night.

Now 39 and effectively retired with the heavyweight ledger settled, he remains the shadow every champion gets measured against. The record book stopped arguing years ago.
