Aljamain Sterling Says He'd Turn Down Jean Silva Short-Notice Fight

Aljamain Sterling has no interest in a hero's welcome he never earned. The former bantamweight champ, now ranked #4 at featherweight with a 26-5 record, went on his podcast to shoot down a rumor that he'd been lined up to face Jean Silva at Noche UFC on Sept. 12. His answer wasn't just no — it was a flat refusal delivered with the kind of self-awareness fighters rarely show on camera.

The context matters. Silva was originally booked opposite Yair Rodriguez in the card's headliner, but Rodriguez pulled out injured and was swapped for Jose Miguel Delgado. Sterling says the matchmakers never actually called him about it. If they had, he claims he'd have told them straight that he wouldn't take the fight — because he simply isn't in shape for five rounds on short notice.

Why He'd Pass

Sterling didn't dress it up. He said he'd just come back from a trip through Serbia and Albania, admitting he'd be on the ground gasping for air if thrown into a five-rounder right now. He conceded he might've entertained a three-round bout on short notice — especially with a big enough payday attached — but a main-event distance against a rising contender was never realistic. Give him a full camp, he argued, and the conversation changes.

That's where the reasoning gets sharper. Sterling made clear a Silva fight actually appeals to him down the line, framing it as more logical than facing 'a guy who was ranked 13 and they just magically bumped him up to 12.' Silva sits deep in the featherweight contender mix, and Sterling — who owns eight career submissions and three knockouts — sees more value in a name than a number.

He also has one eye on UFC 333. Aaron Pico meets Arnold Allen on Oct. 24, and Sterling says he'd happily fight the winner. He'd take Pico if the former Bellator star gets his hand raised, but leans toward Allen, calling him an established name coming off a win — someone he can 'wake up in the morning' excited to fight. As for facing Pico on his own, Sterling doesn't see the upside in a fighter still just 1-1 in the UFC.

For now, he's stuck in limbo and knows it. Sterling's been filling the downtime with side projects, including pushing his rum company, but says he's stepping back from that to focus on training. His timeline is blunt: give him two weeks and he can handle three rounds, two more after that and he'll be ready for five. Whether the pieces fall into place is another matter — but a short-notice call, he insists, isn't the answer.
