Anthony Smith Booked for Gamebred FC Grand Prix as Legal Case Looms

Anthony Smith has his next fight locked in, and it comes with a caveat that most matchmakers wouldn't touch. The former UFC title challenger, 38-22 across a long career with 20 knockouts and 15 submissions, headlines Gamebred FC's heavyweight grand prix on Oct. 2 in the Dominican Republic, facing Jordan Heiderman on a card streaming live on DAZN as part of the promotion's new broadcast deal.

The booking arrives while Smith is still working through serious legal trouble. He was arrested and charged with multiple felonies following an incident in Nebraska involving his wife, and he's pleaded not guilty to all of them. The judge overseeing the case has given him permission to leave the country to compete, with a status update hearing scheduled for Sept. 21.

The Promotion Draws Its Line

Rather than quietly slotting Smith into the bracket, Gamebred FC president and COO Lex McMahon put out a lengthy statement addressing the elephant in the room. He said Smith is entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence like anyone else, and that the legal process should play out on its own timeline without a promotion or public opinion getting ahead of the facts.

McMahon also leaned on the personal angle. He said Smith has a family to provide for and that fighting is how he does it, arguing that stripping his ability to earn a living before his day in court isn't something the promotion is willing to do. McMahon added that he and Jorge Masvidal have known Smith for years, framed their support as a stance on fairness rather than a verdict on the case, and asked that the family's privacy be respected.

What He's Walking Into

This is Smith's second Gamebred FC outing. He debuted back in April with a rear-naked choke over UFC veteran Chase Sherman, a former heavyweight who himself carries a 16-12 record. A win over Heiderman would push Smith to two straight under the banner.

The move to heavyweight is worth noting given Smith spent his UFC run at light heavyweight, where he's currently unranked. His last appearance in the Octagon ended badly, a first-round TKO loss to Zhang Mingyang finished by elbows. At 38-22, Smith knows exactly where he sits in his career. The bigger question hanging over Oct. 2 is what happens after the cage door opens, not inside it.
