Ateba Gautier Faces His Toughest Test Yet Against Roman Kopylov at UFC 332

When Ateba Gautier walked into Las Vegas two years ago for Season 8 of Dana White's Contender Series, he was a 22-year-old with heavy hands and plenty of rough edges. He stopped Yura Naito in the second round and earned his shot. Fast forward to this weekend and the Cameroonian opens the UFC 332 main card at Salt Lake City's Delta Center against Roman Kopylov, carrying an 11-1 record, nine of those wins by knockout, and a five-fight streak with four stoppages.

This is a genuine step up. Kopylov is a 20-fight veteran and a multiple-time combat sambo world champion who's gone 7-3 with five finishes over his last 10 outings — comfortably the most proven opponent on Gautier's resume to date. It's Gautier's third appearance of 2026, and the first against someone with a real track record inside the Octagon.

A Different Fighter

Gautier says he feels like a different man than the prospect who showed up in 2024. He talks about a better vision of things — how he trains, how he thinks, how he carries himself. Having entered the year atop most 'prospects to watch' lists after three straight first-round finishes in his rookie campaign, he's dialed back the swagger. He was noticeably more reserved and focused this week than the man who happily discussed swapping his nickname from 'The Silent Assassin' to 'The Storm' back in January.

That January fight is probably why. Gautier was widely expected to roll through Andrey Pulyaev at UFC 324, but Pulyaev dragged him to the scorecards and took the final round on two judges' cards. It was the kind of reality check that reshapes a young fighter's approach. Gautier now says he takes every opponent seriously — not because of their experience, but because they signed the contract and belong in the UFC.

Fighting For More Than Himself

The bigger shift, by his telling, is perspective. Gautier says he used to fight purely for himself. Now he sees the people behind him — his team, his country, everyone who's supported the climb — and frames every walk to the cage as representing them. It's a mindset that fits a fighter still just 24 and already being talked about as a future contender.

Kopylov offers the perfect measuring stick. If Gautier's knockout power translates against a battle-tested sambo champion, the prospect label starts to look outdated. If Kopylov's experience exposes the same gaps Pulyaev hinted at, we'll learn plenty too. Either way, the main card opener at UFC 332 is the most informative fight of Gautier's young career.
