Benavidez Will Only Jump to Heavyweight for Fury or Usyk
The 32-0 cruiserweight champ says only two names pull him up a division. Everyone else can wait while he chases undisputed.

David Benavidez isn't moving to heavyweight for just anyone. The unified cruiserweight champion, unbeaten at 32-0 with 26 knockouts, has drawn a hard line on who's worth skipping two weight classes for: Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk. Everybody else can wait.
Speaking on the Last Stand Podcast, Benavidez said a shot at either man would override his current plans entirely. And those plans are serious. He's expected to meet WBC champion Michal Cieslak in December, a fight penciled in for Saturday, December 5 in Phoenix, with the undisputed cruiserweight crown on the table. Vergil Ortiz Jr. versus Keith Thurman is reportedly the co-main.
The One-Way Door
The interesting part is that Benavidez knows this isn't a round trip. He admitted that once he builds his frame for heavyweight, there's no coming back down to cruiserweight. That's a big bet for a fighter who relinquished his WBC light-heavyweight belt to make the permanent switch to 200 pounds in the first place. He's not chasing a cash grab — he said he'd treat a loss to Fury or Usyk as a challenge worth taking, win or lose.
He was clear about the pecking order, too. Benavidez name-checked Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic as serious operators and called the heavyweight division red-hot right now. But he framed Fury and Usyk as the two who elevated the sport and, in his words, brought him up. If they offer the fight, he takes it. If they don't, he stays put and keeps collecting belts.
The résumés on the other side explain the hesitation. Usyk is 25-0 (16 KO) and the lineal heavyweight king, fresh off an 11th-round stoppage. Fury, 36-2-1 (25 KO) and ranked third, remains a name that moves the needle regardless of mileage. Benavidez, for all his dominance — his last outing was a sixth-round TKO over Gilberto Ramírez — would be the smaller, lighter man against either.
For now, the smart read is that this is aspiration, not an announcement. Benavidez has an undisputed cruiserweight run in front of him and no concrete heavyweight offer on the table. He's told the division's two biggest names the door is open. Whether either one bothers to walk through it is another matter entirely.
