Berlanga Returns Home as Zuffa Boxing 09 Lands at Madison Square Garden

Edgar Berlanga headlines Zuffa Boxing 09 on Sunday night at the Infosys Theater inside Madison Square Garden, and the Brooklyn super middleweight is walking into the biggest reset of his career. This is his promotional debut, in his own city, ten-plus months removed from the stoppage loss to Hamza Sheeraz that put a dent in his run at the 168-pound title. Beat the right names here and "The Chosen One" is back in the championship conversation. Lose, and the questions get louder.

The opponent isn't a soft landing. Canada's Steven "Bang Bang" Butler shows up on a four-fight, four-knockout streak since moving up to super middleweight, carrying a 38-5-1 record with 32 of those wins coming inside the distance. That's an 84% knockout rate. Butler has fought outside Canada only three times in his career, so this is unfamiliar territory in every sense — new promotion, new border, hostile crowd.

The math is simple. Butler hits, and he hits often. Berlanga has to prove the Sheeraz result was a stumble rather than a ceiling, and doing it against a genuine finisher on home soil is exactly the kind of statement that gets you back in line for a belt.

The Co-Main: Hitchins Moves Up

The co-main might be the more intriguing chess match. Richardson Hitchins, 20-0 with 8 knockouts and ranked #2 at super lightweight, is stepping up to 147 pounds after hitting free agency and signing with Zuffa Boxing. "Africa" is coming off a TKO of George Kambosos Jr in the eighth round, and now he's testing whether his slick, hard-to-hit style travels up a division.

Mexico's Ricardo "Magic Man" Salas is the welcome party, and he's built to give Hitchins trouble. Salas hasn't lost in five years, owns 18 knockouts across 24 wins, and already has Zuffa Boxing pedigree after stopping Jesus Saracho in the eighth round at Zuffa Boxing 04 earlier this year. He's said flatly that he intends to take Hitchins' undefeated record.

Undercard Storylines

The main card opens with a middleweight test for prospect Jalil Hackett, 12-1, who dominated Roberto Cruz Jr more clearly than the majority-decision scorecards let on in his Zuffa Boxing debut. He now trades the Meta APEX for a proper New York crowd.

Across from Hackett stands a hard-luck veteran with a serious résumé. Sergiy Derevyanchenko, 16-6 and 40 years old, returns from a 390-day layoff for one more shot at relevance. "The Technician" has boxed for world titles three times — against Daniel Jacobs, Gennady Golovkin and Jermall Charlo — and lost every one on the cards, each time by the thinnest of margins. Fighting in his adopted hometown, he'll try to spoil a young man's night.
