BoMac Backs Delante Johnson as the Man to Dethrone Devin Haney

Brian 'BoMac' McIntyre thinks the man capable of ending Devin Haney's 33-0 run is currently sitting outside the world title picture entirely. Crawford's longtime trainer told Fight Hub TV that his own fighter, unbeaten welterweight Delante 'Tiger' Johnson, has the tools to dethrone the WBO champion — a bold shout for a 28-year-old who's never fought at the elite level.

Haney claimed the 147lb strap last November, becoming a three-division champion by outpointing Brian Norman Jr. over a wide unanimous decision, complete with a second-round knockdown. Since then, though, 'The Dream' has been treading water. Unification talks with then-WBA titlist Rolando Romero fell apart at the table, and his mandatory defense against Keyshawn Davis (15-0, 10 KO) collapsed after Davis turned down a $3m offer and pulled out following an unfavorable purse bid.

That's left Haney without a dance partner and without a date or venue for his next fight. He's floated interest in facing IBF champ Liam Paro (28-1, 16 KO) and #9-ranked Jack Catterall (33-2), but nothing's been signed.

Johnson's Long Wait

Johnson has been calling Haney out for months, and while BoMac talked him up, he didn't oversell it. He conceded Tiger isn't the biggest test for anyone at welterweight right now — but insisted that when the chance comes, his fighter will be ready. He said the team tried to make the Haney fight, Johnson called him out, and it simply didn't materialize. His message to the kid: be patient, your time will come.

It's a measured pitch, and it needs to be. Johnson is unbeaten but untested against the level Haney operates at. Against a slick, defensively sound champion with a 33-fight unbeaten record, résumé matters — and right now Tiger's is thin at the top.

There's history here too. Johnson and Team Haney got into a physical altercation back in January, the incident spilling over during the weigh-in for Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson. Whatever the merits of the matchup, there's clearly no love lost. For now, though, Johnson is stuck in the queue behind bigger names — waiting for a shot that BoMac believes will eventually come.
