Buckley vs. Malott: Top-15 Welterweights Clash in Edmonton Main Event

The UFC is back in Edmonton on Saturday, October 17, and it's leading with a genuine ranking-mover: No. 10 welterweight Joaquin Buckley against No. 13 Mike Malott at Rogers Place. Buckley (21-8) is walking into hostile territory to try and derail a rising Canadian who's only got two losses in 17 fights (14-2-1). The main card hits Sportsnet and TVA Sports at 8 pm ET, with early prelims on UFC FIGHT PASS from 5 pm ET.

This is a fight with real stakes on both sides. Buckley wants a crack at the division's Top 5, and he's got the résumé to justify the ask — he stopped Colby Covington via doctor's stoppage in Round 3, and owns highlight finishes over Stephen Thompson and Vicente Luque. Malott, meanwhile, is chasing his first appearance inside the Top 10 and doing it in front of his own people.

Why Malott Is the Live Underdog

Don't sleep on the Fonthill, Ontario native. A Dana White's Contender Series signee, Malott is riding a strong run and just handed veteran Gilbert Burns a third-round TKO — punches, not a fluke. He's also got wins over Kevin Holland and Charles Radtke on his ledger. This is his second UFC main event, and he's said he intends to close the show with another finish on home soil.

Buckley is the sharper puncher on paper, a KO artist who tends to turn ordinary matchups into replay fodder. But main events in Canada have a way of dragging in the crowd, and Malott's blend of grappling and pressure gives him a path if he can survive the early exchanges. Two ranked welterweights, one clear winner, and a Top 5 spot dangling behind the loser's inability to grab it.

The Co-Main Deserves Top Billing

The flyweight co-main might be the better fight. No. 4 Erin Blanchfield (14-2) faces No. 7 Jasmine Jasudavicius in a bout with divisional-ladder consequences. Blanchfield, a BJJ black belt, is coming off a Round 2 rear-naked choke of Tracy Cortez and has submission wins over Jessica Andrade and Molly McCann. She's chasing a three-fight streak.

Jasudavicius has her own momentum, most recently beating Karine Silva in April, and she's another Ontario fighter looking to crack the Top 5 in front of a home crowd. Five of Blanchfield's 14 wins have come by submission — a reminder that if this hits the mat, the New Jersey grappler is usually the one dictating terms.

Tickets go on sale Friday, August 14. As always, the card is live and subject to change, but the top two fights alone give Edmonton a reason to fill Rogers Place.
