Christian Mbilli Shrugs Off Canelo Delay Ahead of October 31 Riyadh Clash

Christian Mbilli isn't losing sleep over the extra wait. The WBC super-middleweight champion says a six-week postponement of his showdown with Canelo Alvarez won't dent his preparation, insisting he's stayed calm after chasing this fight for years. The two were slated for September 12 before Canelo cited family reasons and pushed the date to October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

By the time the bell rings, both men will have gone more than a year without a fight. That's a serious layoff for a 36-year-old former undisputed king carrying a 63-2-2 (39 KO) record, and for a champion who was only upgraded from interim to full titleholder last December. Mbilli told FIGHTMAG at a public workout that one month, two months, or more simply doesn't matter when you've waited this long.

How Mbilli Got Here

The Frenchman's rise to full champion came through the back door rather than the ring. He earned the interim belt after boxing to a 10-round draw with Lester Martinez, then inherited the full WBC strap when Terence Crawford vacated all four 168lb titles in December after retiring as a three-division undisputed champion.

Crawford's exit is the shadow hanging over this whole matchup. 'Bud' outpointed Canelo by unanimous decision to strip him of everything, moving to 42-0 (31 KO) and handing the Mexican just his second career defeat. Canelo actually looked sharp in that loss by recent standards, which is exactly why he's back chasing one of his old belts rather than fading out.

The Stylistic Puzzle

This is a classic craft-versus-pressure clash. Canelo is the more polished, more decorated boxer, but Mbilli's calling card is relentless aggression and volume, the kind of output that can drown skill under sheer work rate. That divide runs through the boxing world too.
