Cody Chovancek has waited 11 years for Saturday night. The undefeated Canadian bantamweight finally makes his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night: Buckley vs. Malott in Edmonton, more than a year after earning his contract with a third-round stoppage on Dana White's Contender Series. A knee injury — suffered five weeks before that audition and aggravated during the win over Raphael Uchegbu — cost him the back half of a season on the shelf.

Chovancek walks in at 9-0 (4 KO, 2 SUB) and draws a genuine test straight out of the gate: SuYoung You, a 16-4 veteran with 11 more pro fights than the newcomer. You emerged from Road to UFC Season 3 and banked decision wins in his first two Octagon appearances before dropping his last outing to a second-round rear-naked choke against Elijah Smith.

Trusting the Process

The layoff was the hardest part, by Chovancek's own account. He said the mental grind outside the cage tested him far more than fighting ever has, and credited the UFC Performance Institute for the rehab, strength work and nutrition that got him back. His Niagara Top Team coaches and teammates — several of them on this same card — kept telling him to trust the work.

That support system is stacked. Chovancek trains alongside headliner Mike Malott (14-2-1), coming off a third-round TKO of Gilbert Burns, and #7 women's flyweight Jasmine Jasudavicius (15-4), who meets Erin Blanchfield on the same night. Having the whole room in Edmonton, in a province where he's fought under the Unified MMA banner and visited family, makes the step up feel less daunting.

The Prediction

Chovancek isn't hiding from the matchup. He expects You to chase takedowns and change levels behind strikes, but he's confident he holds a sizable edge on the feet — and he's quick to point at the cauliflower ears as proof he can grapple too. He pushed back on betting companies writing off Canadian MMA, framing this fight as part of a resurgence.

Then he went full Mystic: Chovancek flat-out predicted he'd put You to sleep and nabs the $100,000 performance bonus. He's done the knocking out, choking out and tapping out for years, he said — now it just happens under brighter lights. Prelims start at 5pm ET from Rogers Place, with the main card at 8pm ET on Paramount+.
