Conor McGregor says his surgically repaired knee won't stop him. The 38-year-old announced this past Wednesday that he'd successfully undergone an operation to fix the ACL he tore against Max Holloway at UFC 329 — his first appearance in five years, and one that ended in a first-round TKO loss. In a Friday video, he laid out a summer 2026 target for his return, which would be the last fight on his current UFC deal.

It's the second ACL tear of a career that now sits at 22-7 with 19 knockouts. McGregor framed the surgery itself as proof of his mindset — straight in, knee repaired, straight back to work — and told doubters they can keep talking while he handles the rebuild. For a fighter who's spent more time on the shelf than in the cage lately, the confidence is familiar. The results are the question.

The Comeback Roadmap

McGregor pointed to the fighters who've done this before him. He name-checked Dominick Cruz, who came back from multiple ACL tears to reclaim the bantamweight belt, and Georges St-Pierre, who also dealt with ACL problems and never lost his movement. He threw in Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers for good measure, but it's the MMA names that matter here — proof that a torn knee doesn't have to be a career sentence.

There's a strange bit of symmetry to all this. McGregor first hurt his knee back in August 2013 — against Holloway, of all people — and still won that fight, then returned in July 2014 to beat Diego Brandao. The context is harder to spin. McGregor lost five prime years after breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. A planned 2024 comeback at UFC 303 fell apart to injury, and his fighting career was further stalled by off-cage issues, including being found liable for sexual assault in a civil case that same year. The Holloway rematch was supposed to be the clean restart. It lasted a round.
