Cyborg Takes Aim at Claressa Shields, Says MMA Was 'Too Hard'
Cris Cyborg claims Shields walked away from MMA after her 2021 debut — and says she'd submit the boxing champ in round one without throwing a punch.

Cris Cyborg isn't letting the cross-combat rivalry cool off. The former MMA world champion took direct aim at boxing star Claressa Shields this week, claiming Shields abandoned mixed martial arts after her single pro outing in 2021 because the sport was simply too demanding. According to Cyborg, Shields has had just eight boxing fights since returning to the ring — the same number Cyborg says she racked up while holding an MMA title.
The jab goes deeper than scheduling. Cyborg argued that had Shields stuck with MMA, she'd likely be a purple or brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by now, framing the retreat to boxing as Shields consistently choosing the path of least resistance. It's a pointed accusation aimed at one of the most decorated athletes in women's boxing.
The Confident Prediction
Cyborg didn't stop at criticism. She claimed she would beat Shields in an MMA fight without throwing a single strike — citing a weight gap of her 145 pounds against Shields' 175 — and suggested the bout would end in the first round and get ugly. She even floated the idea that Shields might never fight again afterward.
The subtext here is the grappling gulf. Boxing rewards elite hand speed and head movement, but none of that translates once takedowns, submissions and the clinch enter the picture. A single pro MMA bout in 2021 doesn't buy you the ground fundamentals that years on the mat do, and Cyborg knows exactly where that line sits.
Why It Lands
What makes the callout sting is the kernel of truth in it. Shields did test the cage once and return to the squared circle, and the skill sets genuinely don't cross over cleanly. Whether any promoter could ever stitch together a cross-discipline superfight is another question entirely.
For now, this stays a war of words. But Cyborg has planted the flag, and the challenge is specific: her ground game against Shields' boxing, in an MMA cage. It's the kind of matchup that fans argue about precisely because it'll probably never happen.
