Now Aspinall's setback has cleared the top of the division, yet White insists the interim champ earns undisputed status in the cage rather than by default. He told Sportsnet the bout to crown a full champion should be announced very soon.

How Gane Got Here

Gane picked up the interim strap with a TKO win over Alex Pereira at the UFC White House card this summer. That was supposed to be the setup for a unification rematch with Aspinall before the year was out. Pereira, a light heavyweight moonlighting up a division, dropped to 13-4 (11 KO) with the loss and is back at 205 pounds chasing a title eliminator.

The plan now is scrambled. Aspinall's injury timeline is a blank. White admitted he has no idea how long the ex-champ will be sidelined, saying only that the UFC is ready whenever the eyes heal. That leaves the door open for Aspinall to eventually face whoever wins Gane's next fight, but nobody can pencil in a date.

Not the First Time

White brushed off the chaos as routine, pointing out the promotion is dealing with the same situation right now in the women's flyweight division with Valentina Shevchenko. His message: it happens, it's unfortunate, and the UFC will sort it out. Blunt, no timeline, no drama.

So Gane sits in a strange spot. He owns hardware, he's the closest thing the division has to a functioning champion, and he still doesn't get to call himself the guy. The opponent for that undisputed fight is the next domino, and White says it's coming fast. Until then, the heavyweight picture stays exactly as murky as Aspinall's vision.
