White later doubled down by tossing a smiley-face emoji at his own quote as it spread online, which isn't a signed contract but isn't nothing either. The subtext writes itself. Nurmagomedov trains alongside Islam Makhachev — the UFC's current No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter — and his brother Umar is a ranked bantamweight in the same promotion. The family pipeline to the UFC is already wide open.

The Family Connection

Khabib Nurmagomedov, a UFC Hall of Famer, serves as Usman's head coach and has flatly called him the best lightweight on the planet outside the UFC roster. On Instagram, Khabib praised his cousin's all-around game and offered a timeline: negotiations kick off next month, with an answer expected very soon. That's about as close to a public schedule as free agency gets.

The competition for his signature is real. PFL-MVP brass, including CEO John Martin and Jake Paul, have made no secret they want Nurmagomedov to stay. But the pull of the UFC — bigger stage, family already embedded, and a lightweight division stacked with names — is a tough offer to talk yourself out of.
