Dana White Steps Between Tsarukyan and Ruffy at UFC 331 Faceoff

Dana White doesn't usually play referee at a press conference. He made an exception Friday. When Arman Tsarukyan and Mauricio Ruffy came together for their first faceoff ahead of UFC 331 in Los Angeles, White physically intervened, having the two lightweights pulled apart before anything got out of hand.

The caution wasn't random. Tsarukyan, ranked #2 at 155 pounds with a 23-3 record, has a reputation for turning staredowns into incidents — most notoriously headbutting Dan Hooker at their final faceoff before UFC Qatar last year. Tsarukyan then went out and submitted Hooker via arm-triangle in the second round, but the pre-fight theatrics are what stuck. So when Ruffy extended a fist and Tsarukyan started walking forward, White wasn't in the mood to find out what came next.

The bout is a lightweight title eliminator, which raises the stakes on both sides. Tsarukyan owns nine knockouts and six submissions across his career and sits one spot from the top of a stacked division. A clean win over Ruffy likely puts him back in line for the belt he was scheduled to fight for before injury pulled him from a previous title shot.

The Main Event Got Hotter

If White was worried about the co-main, the headliner nearly needed its own security detail. The flyweight title rematch between Joshua Van and champion Alexandre Pantoja produced a testy press conference, with Pantoja arguing throughout and at one point trying to confront Van before the two even reached the stage.

There's real history there. Pantoja (30-6, with 12 of those wins by submission) is defending against the man who beat him — Van handed the champion a first-round TKO loss in their last meeting. That's the kind of result that makes a rematch personal, and the faceoff reflected it.

UFC 331 goes down September 19 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Between a champion chasing revenge and a lightweight contender White clearly doesn't fully trust at arm's length, the card already has its narrative. The fights just need to catch up to the faceoffs.
