Darren Till Breaks Down That 4-Minute Romero Staredown Before BKFC 94

For years, Darren Till turned Yoel Romero into a running bit — the one guy the Scouser swore he'd dodge at all costs. On Saturday the joke stops being a joke. Till, 18-5-1 across his MMA career with 10 knockouts, headlines BKFC 94 opposite the Olympic silver medalist in a bare-knuckle main event, and a win moves him to 2-0 under the promotion's banner.

The setup went viral before either man threw a punch. When BKFC introduced the fight at a press conference, Till and Romero met for a staredown that stretched close to four minutes, neither blinking, with president David Feldman stuck in the middle watching the temperature climb. Till says there was no deep strategy behind it — he just refuses to look away first.

Was Till Ever Actually Scared?

Till is honest about where the old jokes came from. Romero is a genuinely frightening opponent, and Till admits those tongue-in-cheek comments carried a kernel of truth. His personal rule: a real fighter isn't scared of anyone unless it's a heavyweight the size of Francis Ngannou — the former UFC champ who sits at 19-3 with 14 KOs. Romero, in Till's telling, is the rare exception who earns the nervous respect.

He's also not buying the idea that Romero's age neutralizes the threat. Till argues the Cuban is still big, strong, hard to hit, and carries enough of a gas tank to make this the most dangerous fight on the bare-knuckle circuit. That danger, he says, is exactly the draw — the whole point of fighting is testing yourself against someone who can hurt you.

As for the staredown itself, Till claims Romero broke character first, talking and chewing his gum hard while Till stayed locked in his own zone. His message in that moment was blunt: he intends to do as much damage to Romero as Romero plans to do to him, and all the old 'I'm scared of you' talk looks a little different now that neither man is flinching.

Till comes into this off a rough patch in the UFC — his last outing ended in a third-round neck-crank submission against Dricus Du Plessis. Bare-knuckle is a reset, and he's already scripting the payoff.
