Erik Morales Settles the Chavez vs Duran Debate at 140 Pounds
Both legends topped 100 pro wins. Morales says one weight class decides a dream fight that never happened in 2016.

Erik Morales has weighed in on one of boxing's great what-ifs, and his verdict comes with a caveat about the scales. The three-division Mexican champion told Luis Parra that Julio Cesar Chavez beats Roberto Duran at 140 pounds, full stop, but he's less certain the same holds true a single division lower at 135.
The context matters here: both men retired with more than 100 professional wins, and both are routinely parked in pound-for-pound all-time conversations. Chavez collected titles across three weight classes and is still treated as Mexico's most beloved fighter. Duran, the Panamanian 'Hands of Stone,' is regarded by plenty of historians as the greatest lightweight who ever lived.
Why 140 Changes Everything
Morales was blunt about where Chavez peaked. In his view, nobody — Duran included — was beating the best version of Chavez at super-lightweight. He pointed to the names on the 140-pound ledger as proof: Hector Camacho and Meldrick Taylor sat at a different level of the sport, and Chavez handled that company while at his physical strongest.
The lower weight is where Morales hedges. He credited Chavez with solid wins at 135 against the likes of Juan LaPorte and Edwin Rosario, but reckons Duran was simply more at home at lightweight. Both men were tough and durable there, he said; the difference is that Duran lived at 135 while Chavez was only passing through.
There's a historical wrinkle worth noting. Duran never fought at 140 in his prime — he made the famous leap straight from lightweight up to welterweight, where he out-pointed Sugar Ray Leonard. So the division Morales rates as Chavez's best is the one Duran effectively skipped, which tilts the hypothetical before a punch is thrown.
The two came closest to actually sharing a ring in 2016, when an exhibition between them was floated. It never came together, leaving the matchup to live purely in the realm of debate. For now, Morales has planted his flag: Chavez at 140, no argument — but ask him again one division down and he'll start talking about Duran's granite chin.
