Frank Bruno has handed down his verdict on one of boxing's great unbuilt fights: a prime George Foreman against a prime Lennox Lewis. Speaking to Clubhouse Boxing, Bruno backed Foreman — the man who became the oldest heavyweight world champion in history at 45, stopping Michael Moorer for the WBA and IBF belts in November 1994.

It's a loaded pick coming from Bruno, who knows exactly what Lewis brings. 'The Lion' beat him on his way to the top, and Lewis went on to build one of the division's most complete résumés — WBC titles, undisputed status after dethroning Evander Holyfield in 1999, and career wins over Mike Tyson and Vitali Klitschko. Bruno is siding against the fighter who got the better of him.

Two Timelines That Almost Crossed

The fascinating part is how close these careers ran. Foreman first grabbed world honours with a second-round demolition of Joe Frazier in January 1973, lost the crown to Muhammad Ali in the Rumble in the Jungle the following year, then retired in 1977 before returning a full decade later. His comeback peaked with that Moorer knockout in late 1994.

Lewis was holding the WBC belt around the same window. He dropped it to Oliver McCall in September 1994, then reclaimed it in their rematch just over two years later. So for a brief stretch in the mid-90s, two of the greatest heavyweights ever were both wearing hardware — just not the version of Foreman that would terrify a prime Lewis.

Why It Never Happened

A prime-for-prime clash is pure fantasy by definition, and it turns out the real-world version was never on the table either. Lewis has since admitted he simply never wanted the fight, viewing Foreman as a lose-lose: beat an ageing legend and you get no credit, lose and you've been toppled by a man in his mid-40s.

So Bruno's answer stays hypothetical, which is the only way this one was ever going to be settled. Foreman's power against Lewis's size and jab remains a barroom debate — and Bruno, for what it's worth, thinks Big George finds a way.
