Gervonta Davis Eyes 2027 Comeback — And Ryan Garcia Wants Him First

Gervonta Davis is coming back, and the sport's biggest names are already lining up. The unbeaten Baltimore knockout artist — 30-0-1 with 28 stoppages — is targeting a return in early 2027 after more than a year and a half on the sidelines, and one of those fights could headline the entire calendar.

Davis hasn't had his hand raised since June 2024. His last appearance came in March 2025, a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. that ended his winning streak on the scorecards. Out-of-ring legal problems shut the door on his career in the months that followed, and that inactivity has now cost him hardware.

Stripped, But Not Shut Out

The WBA has taken his lightweight title and designated him 'champion-in-recess.' In plain terms: he's lost the belt but keeps a golden ticket. Whoever wins the vacant title fight between #7-ranked Floyd Schofield (19-0, 13 KO) and #10 Lucas Bahdi (20-0, 15 KO) is on the hook to defend against Davis, meaning Tank could reclaim a world title in his very first fight back.

That said, the belt might be beside the point. With no strap tied to him right now, there's chatter about Davis dropping into the super-lightweight mix or even climbing to welterweight to chase the marquee money. The #3-ranked 135-pounder has spent his career hunting the loudest possible opponents, and there's no shortage of them at 140 and 147.

Garcia Wants the Rematch

Enter Ryan Garcia. Speaking on a Kick stream, the new WBC welterweight champion said that if he had to pick between running it back with Davis or with fellow 147-pound titlist Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KO), he'd take Tank. Garcia's reasoning was blunt: Haney, in his view, has already been handled, so the Davis rematch is the one that actually settles a score.

The score in question is Garcia's 2023 knockout loss to Davis — the only real blemish that still stings for 'King Ry.' There's a catch, though. Garcia insists any sequel happens at welterweight, while Davis has said 140 is the absolute ceiling for a Garcia bout. Garcia claims the two camps have already been in contact, so the weight standoff may be the only thing between fans and one of 2027's biggest nights.
