Inoue Sets a Deadline on Bam Rodriguez: February or Featherweight

Naoya Inoue has put a timer on the biggest fight boxing's little men can offer. The undisputed super-bantamweight champion says he'll face Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez around February 2027 — and if Rodriguez wants to linger at bantamweight beyond that, Inoue is prepared to skip the whole thing and jump to featherweight instead.

That's a hard line from a man coming off the biggest domestic fight in Japanese boxing history. In May, Inoue defended his 122lb crown for the seventh time by outpointing fellow star Junto Nakatani over the distance, dropping Nakatani to 32-1 (24 KO). It was the kind of win that usually earns a fighter the luxury of naming his terms — and Inoue is doing exactly that.

The Bam Problem

Rodriguez, 24-0 with 17 knockouts, has been chasing this collision for months. He vacated all three of his super-flyweight belts to climb toward Inoue, then announced himself at 118lbs by stopping WBA champion Antonio Vargas inside six rounds. Vargas now sits at 19-2-1. On paper, Bam did everything he needed to fast-track the superfight.

Then he blinked. Rodriguez and trainer Robert Garcia have floated one more outing at bantamweight before the leap to 122 — specifically a unification with WBO champ Christian Medina, penciled in for November or December. Medina, 27-4 (19 KO), is coming off a unanimous-decision win over Adrian Curiel, so it's a real fight, not a stay-busy job.

That's the crux of Inoue's frustration. Speaking to Japanese media, he insisted he isn't fixated on Rodriguez and said that if Bam wants more time at 118, he'll simply pivot to a featherweight challenge instead. February works. Beyond that, he says, he'll go his own way — no obsession, no waiting around.

The math is what makes this awkward. A Rodriguez-Medina card in late December leaves a two-month turnaround before February, which is tight bordering on impossible for a fight of that magnitude. Inoue's comments essentially force a choice: promoter Eddie Hearn either finds a way to line up Bam for early 2027, or watches the biggest fight in the division evaporate as Inoue chases new belts a weight class up.
