Jordan Burroughs Wants a Wrestling Match With Georges St-Pierre

Jordan Burroughs has a bucket-list opponent, and it isn't a fellow wrestler. The 2012 Olympic gold medalist and multiple-time world champion says the man he wants across the mat from him is Georges St-Pierre, the retired two-division UFC titleholder who last competed in 2019.

Burroughs made the pitch publicly, essentially inviting St-Pierre to a straight wrestling match. He framed it less as a grudge and more as a tribute, saying he respects GSP's legacy and has no interest in embarrassing or humiliating the former champion. What he wants, in his words, is to share the stage with him.

It's a fascinating call-out precisely because of the mismatch in specialties. Burroughs built his entire career on the wrestling mat, where he's one of the most decorated American freestyle competitors of his generation. St-Pierre, for all his greatness, was a mixed martial artist who used wrestling as one weapon among many.

Why GSP, and Why Now

St-Pierre's grappling was always part of his mystique. He famously out-wrestled elite wrestlers inside the cage and later became a black belt on the jiu-jitsu circuit. That crossover pedigree is exactly what makes him an appealing target for Burroughs, who's clearly interested in a name that transcends the wrestling world.

The obvious caveat: this is a challenge, not a booking. St-Pierre has been retired from active competition for years and hasn't indicated any appetite for a grappling exhibition. There's no promotion attached, no date, and no response from GSP's camp as of yet.

Still, Burroughs saying it out loud matters. Grappling super-matches have become a genuine subgenre of combat sports, and a name like St-Pierre would draw eyes from both the MMA and wrestling communities. Whether the former champ bites is another question entirely — but the invitation is on the table.
