Makhachev Puts 16-Fight Streak on the Line vs Machado Garry at UFC 330

UFC 330 goes down this Saturday in Philadelphia, and the promotion has locked in a main card stacked with two title fights. Welterweight champion Islam Makhachev headlines against #1 contender Ian Machado Garry, while strawweight queen Mackenzie Dern runs the co-main against #5-ranked Gillian Robertson.

Makhachev walks in on a 16-fight win streak — the kind of run that puts a fighter in the pound-for-pound conversation and keeps him there. Machado Garry is no charity case, though. The Irishman sits at 17-1 (7 KO, 1 SUB), and since the lone blemish on his record he's rattled off two straight, most recently a unanimous-decision win over Belal Muhammad.

The Welterweight Math

This is a step up in weight and stakes for Machado Garry, who's built his case at 170 with tape and mouth in equal measure. His resume is thin on finishes — one submission, seven knockouts across 18 pro fights — which tells you he's a points-and-pressure operator rather than a one-punch merchant. Against a grappler as complete as Makhachev, decision-round management will matter.

Makhachev, for his part, moved up and immediately claimed gold, and the champion has said he intends to keep proving he belongs at the top of the sport regardless of division. Sixteen wins deep, there's not much left to say that his record hasn't already.

Dern's First Defense

The co-main gives Dern her first crack at defending the strawweight belt, and Robertson has earned the shot the hard way. She's on a five-fight tear, sitting at 17-8 with a jiu-jitsu-heavy profile — nine of those wins by submission — and her latest was a unanimous nod over Amanda Lemos.

That sets up a genuine grappling puzzle. Dern's back-take game is elite, but so is Robertson's, and whoever wins the scramble battle likely walks out with the belt. The card was confirmed during last weekend's UFC Vegas 120 broadcast, and with both belts on the line, Philadelphia gets one of the deeper title nights of the year.
