Mikkel Kessler is coming back. The former WBC super middleweight champion, now 47, hasn't thrown a punch in anger since 2013, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Carl Froch in their rematch. Thirteen years later, he's booked a return against American club fighter Bernard Joseph on November 28 in Copenhagen.

That's a long time away from the ring — long enough that most fighters his age are deep into coaching careers, not lacing up again. Kessler's resume still holds up, though: he took the WBC belt off Markus Beyer with a third-round stoppage in 2006, defended it, and split his two meetings with Froch, winning the first in 2010 by the same scorecard margin he'd later lose by.

A Career That Ran Into Legends

The only other blemishes on Kessler's record came against genuine Hall of Famers. Joe Calzaghe outpointed him over twelve rounds at Cardiff's Principality Stadium, and Andre Ward got him out of there via 11th-round technical decision in their 2009 bout. Losing only to Calzaghe, Ward and Froch isn't the worst company to keep.

This isn't his first attempt at a return, either. Kessler planned a comeback around 2019, roughly four years after hanging up the gloves in 2015, but Lyme disease shut it down before it started. Since then he's poured his energy into training Oliver Zaren, an unbeaten super middleweight who steps up against IBF champion Osleys Iglesias on October 8.

The Opponent and the Risk

Zaren faces a serious test in Iglesias, who carries a 15-0 record with 14 knockouts and is coming off a stoppage of Pavel Silyagin that ended with the Russian retiring in the eighth. That's a 93 percent finish rate — a brutal ask for any contender. Kessler's own return is pitched far softer, with Joseph described as a club-level fighter agreed to share a ring in the Danish capital.

Kalle and Nisse Sauerland, the promoters behind Misfits and Misfits Pro, are running the show. They worked with Kessler through some of the biggest nights of his career, so there's a familiar hand steering this one. Whether a 47-year-old can summon anything close to his old form after thirteen idle years is the whole question — and this Joseph fight is only the first answer.
