Moses Itauma Named WBA Mandatory After Rankings Blunder Corrected

The WBA has cleaned up its own paperwork, and it works out nicely for the hottest prospect in the heavyweight division. Moses Itauma, 21 years old and 14-0 with 12 knockouts, has been confirmed as the sole official mandatory challenger for WBA champion Murat Gassiev — correcting a July ranking that mistakenly slotted Jarrell Miller into that spot.

The committee's clarification was blunt: there's one official mandatory in the division, and it's Itauma, who sits at No. 1 in the WBA order and has been waiting on a title shot for months. Miller did return in April, beating Lenier Peró by unanimous decision in Las Vegas, but that fight wasn't a final eliminator — so it never earned him mandatory status in the first place.

The Road to a Belt

This isn't a free pass. Before any of the title talk becomes real, Itauma has to get past Filip Hrgovic at The O2 Arena on August 29 — comfortably the stiffest test of his young career. Win that, and the path to Gassiev opens straight up.

It's worth appreciating how quickly Itauma has built this résumé. His last outing saw him become the first man to stop Jermaine Franklin, a TKO in the fifth. Along the way he's collected names like Mariusz Wach, Demsey McKean, and Dillian Whyte — whose own ledger (31-4, 21 KO) now includes a first-round stoppage loss to the youngster.

Gassiev, for his part, landed the WBA Regular strap with a knockout of Kubrat Pulev in December, then got bumped up to full champion after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his unified titles this summer. That reshuffle is the whole reason there's a mandatory to fight for.

Two Belts on the Table

The WBA situation isn't Itauma's only route to a world title, either. He's already been ordered to negotiate with Frank Sanchez — the No. 7 heavyweight at 26-1 (19 KO), fresh off a second-round knockout of Richard Torrez — for the vacant IBF strap. So a 21-year-old with 14 pro fights suddenly has two credible paths to a belt. The only catch is Hrgovic, and that's a big one.
