Nelson Hysa Walks Away From Agit Kabayel WBC Title Shot

Agit Kabayel will make the first defense of his full WBC heavyweight title in Germany later this year — just not against the man he thought he'd signed. Nelson Hysa, the unbeaten Albanian who confronted Kabayel after stopping Thomas Narmo in two rounds last month, agreed terms and then pulled out days later, according to promoter Frank Warren.

The 33-year-old Kabayel sits at 27-0 (19 KO) and was upgraded from interim to full champion in June, after Oleksandr Usyk vacated his remaining three belts. So the champ now has a title, a venue, and no dance partner. Warren says that won't last: he expects to announce a replacement next week, and he's promising a top-10 name.

What Hysa Walked Away From

Warren didn't hide his frustration. He said Hysa came to the office, agreed terms with contract and everything done, then messaged a couple of days later to say he didn't want the fight. Turning down a world title shot, Warren added, is beyond him — most fighters spend careers chasing exactly this.

It's a strange call on paper. A title challenge against a champion who's never actually fought at true elite level for the belt is the kind of opening a prospect rarely gets. Kabayel's resume is real, though. He iced Zhilei Zhang in six, stopped Damian Knyba in three last January, and owns previous finishes over Frank Sanchez and Arslanbek Makhmudov. Those body shots are the calling card, and they've made him one of the division's most feared inside fighters.

The Bigger Picture

The replacement fight is really a placeholder for what Kabayel wants next year: unification. That road runs straight through the winner of Daniel Dubois versus Fabio Wardley, whose WBO title rematch lands October 17. Dubois already handled Wardley once by TKO in the eleventh, taking his record to 23-3 (22 KO) and leaving Wardley at 20-1-1 (19 KO).

For now, Kabayel just needs a body in front of him and a clean defense to put his world-level credentials beyond argument. Warren's in the Kabayel business, as he put it, and the champ's next opponent should be public within days. The unification talk only matters if this one goes smoothly first.
