Ref Freezes During Skyler King Beatdown, Pros Demand Accountability

Referee Nate Mann barely reacted as Byron Wilson battered a pro-debut opponent at NFC 191 — even the fighter on the receiving end wants answers.

Referee incompetence is a familiar complaint on the regional scene, but what unfolded in the main event of National Fighting Championship 191 in Georgia went beyond a bad call. Byron Wilson, fighting for just the second time as a pro, was teeing off on debutant Skyler King while referee Nate Mann stood by and did almost nothing — even after Wilson walked away believing the bout was already over.

King had essentially stopped defending himself, and Wilson took the pause as a signal the fight was done. When no stoppage came, he stepped back in and cracked King with another hard shot. Only then did Mann move to wave it off. Two men with a combined three pro fights between them were left unprotected in a spot where the third person in the cage is supposed to be the fail-safe.

The Pros Weren't Having It

UFC featherweight Shane Burgos torched the officiating in the comments, arguing that referees need to be held accountable when this happens. King himself joined the pile-on, pointing out the obvious: once his opponent walked away and the punches stopped, he assumed the fight was over — and there was more than enough time for the referee to notice he wasn't fighting back.

It's hard to argue with him. Fighters aren't supposed to waive off their own bouts, but you can't fault Wilson for not wanting to inflict damage he thought was pointless. The job of recognizing a beaten opponent belongs to the man in the collared shirt, and on this night it simply didn't happen.

The Rest of the Carnage

The undercard scene delivered plenty of clean finishes to offset the mess. On an Anthony Pettis FC 24 card (streaming on UFC Fight Pass), Turpal Khamzayev chopped down Angelo Pettis — cousin of former champions Anthony and Sergio — before closing with a spinning wheel kick. The 21-year-old Angelo has now been submitted and knocked out in his short pro run.

The fastest work of the night belonged to Josue Sotero, who needed just 22 seconds to lock up a heel hook and improve to 5-0. Three of the 24-year-old's five wins have come inside a minute. Elsewhere, Damien Deleon landed an 11-second head-kick knockout, and Jeremiah Delgado started celebrating a head-kick finish before his opponent even hit the canvas. Clean stoppages, all of them — which is exactly the point.
