The 37-year-old has three fights left on his contract and plans to test the market — starting with Tom Nolan at UFC Vegas 123 on Saturday.

Renato Moicano has a number in his head, and it isn't a ranking — it's a dollar figure. The 37-year-old lightweight says he has three fights left on his current UFC contract and intends to run them all out before deciding whether to re-sign. If the money's right, he stays. If not, he wants to find out what free agency feels like.
That conversation kicks off Saturday at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas, where Moicano headlines UFC Vegas 123 against Tom Nolan, a prospect who's won five in a row. It's a telling booking: a 13-fight UFC veteran eyeing the exit, against a young fighter trying to force his way up the ladder.
Why He's Betting On Himself
Moicano isn't short on options outside the cage, and he knows it. He's building a YouTube channel, runs a gym, has started managing fighters in Brazil, and has an MMA promotion running a show on December 5. He also floated boxing and influencing as paths that don't involve getting punched in a UFC main event. The message is clear — he'll weigh the UFC's offer against everything else on his plate.
The timing matters on a personal level too. Moicano said his wife is expecting twins in December, which means an extended layoff on top of the two kids he already has. That's part of why he wanted to fight now rather than wait around for a matchup that kept falling apart.
The Ortega Saga
That matchup was Brian Ortega. The two were booked twice this year — UFC 326 in March and again at UFC 331 in September — and both times Ortega withdrew. Moicano says the UFC tried to make it a third time in Qatar in November, and he flatly refused, no longer trusting that Ortega would actually show. He added that he was frustrated but had moved on.
Enter Nolan, who Moicano picked off the rankings himself. He called the Australian dangerous but welcomed the test — a hungry opponent beats a no-show every time.
The Form Line
Moicano arrives on the back of a rough patch and a reset. He dropped a championship stoppage loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 in January 2025, then a decision to Beneil Dariush at UFC 317 five months later. He stopped the bleeding in April with a second-round submission of Chris Duncan in the UFC Vegas 115 main event. Beat Nolan this weekend and he builds momentum heading into contract negotiations — which, for a man ready to bet on himself, is exactly the position he wants to be in.
