Ryan Garcia Picks Sugar Ray Leonard as Welterweight GOAT

Ryan Garcia had nine welterweight legends in front of him and one seat at the table. When the WBC champion, 25-2 with 20 knockouts, ran through a fantasy bracket of the division's greatest names, it was Sugar Ray Leonard who came out the other side unbeaten. Garcia had Leonard beating everyone put in front of him.

That's a loaded field to survive. The names on the board included Manny Pacquiao, Roberto Duran, Errol Spence Jr, Pernell Whitaker, Thomas Hearns, Terence Crawford, Floyd Mayweather and Sugar Ray Robinson. Leonard's real-life credentials back Garcia's call: he retired 36-4 with 25 KOs and collected world titles across five weight classes, from light middleweight up to light heavyweight.

The Leonard argument isn't just about hardware, either. He was the standout of the legendary 'Four Kings' era alongside Duran, Hearns and Marvin Hagler — and the only one of the quartet to beat all three of the others. That's the kind of head-to-head record that makes a mythical bracket a little less mythical.

Garcia's Own Welterweight Climb

Garcia isn't picking greats from the cheap seats anymore. He won the WBC welterweight strap in February, outpointing Mario Barrios via unanimous decision to plant his flag at 147. He's a genuine title-holder now, not a lightweight tourist, and the belt gives his opinions a bit more weight.

First, though, comes Conor Benn. Garcia defends the WBC title against him on September 12 at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena. Benn walks in at 25-1 with 14 knockouts, unranked but coming off a unanimous-decision win over Regis Prograis — a decent scalp that says he belongs in this conversation.

The Bigger Picture

Beat Benn and the map opens up fast. Unification talk points toward WBO champ Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KO), IBF holder Liam Paro (28-1, 16 KO) and Teofimo Lopez. A Haney rematch would carry extra spice given their history. For now, Garcia's dreaming about Leonard — but the division's real kings are all still active, and one of them is standing across the ring in a couple of weeks.
