Song Yadong KOs Umar Nurmagomedov, Rockets to No. 4 at 135

Song Yadong just did the one thing nobody at 135 pounds had managed: he put Umar Nurmagomedov to sleep. In the UFC Shanghai main event on Saturday, the 28-year-old Chinese striker landed a single, perfectly placed punch to become the first fighter to finish Nurmagomedov and only the second to beat him at all. On the back of it, Song leaps from No. 7 to No. 4 in the bantamweight rankings.

That's a three-spot jump off one result, and it's earned. This was arguably the biggest upset of a 2026 already stuffed with them — a year that's given us Sean Strickland toppling the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev and Justin Gaethje finally taking undisputed lightweight gold from Ilia Topuria at UFC White House. Song's number is now firmly in the title conversation, and that's a sentence very few people would have written a week ago.

The Case Against Song, Now Torn Up

The old read on Song was easy to write. Heavy hands, still developing, padded resume. His wins over Henry Cejudo, Marlon Moraes and Marlon Vera looked shiny on paper, but Cejudo was returning winless, Moraes was mid-collapse toward a seven-fight skid, and the Vera decision drew complaints on the cards.

The harder evidence was the top tier. Cory Sandhagen beat him. Petr Yan beat him. Sean O'Malley beat him. None of those were close. So heading into a fight with Nurmagomedov — a man who looked like he was just staying busy while waiting for a title window to reopen — Song was very much the guy expected to lose again.

Instead he shattered the ceiling everyone had drawn above his head. Nurmagomedov ended up flat on the canvas while Song celebrated, and whatever developmental label was attached to him no longer fits.

What the Numbers Say About the Log Jam

The division doesn't slow down from here. Song wasn't even the only ranked man to spring a surprise on the card — No. 6 Mario Bautista beat No. 5 Sandhagen. Up top, No. 1 Petr Yan meets No. 2 Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 333 on Oct. 24, a fight that could redraw the entire picture Song just forced his way into. Prospects are stacked below him too, with No. 14 Raul Rosas Jr. facing Raoni Barcelos on Sept. 26.

There are still four unpredictable months left in 2026, so calling this the upset of the year might be premature. But for one night in Shanghai, Song Yadong reset his own story with a single punch — and dragged himself into the title chase in the process.
