Song Yadong did the thing nobody had managed in 22 professional fights: he finished Umar Nurmagomedov. The No. 6 bantamweight stopped the No. 3-ranked Nurmagomedov by TKO at 1:48 of the second round in Shanghai, handing the previously slick Dagestani his first-ever loss by finish and only the second defeat of his career. On home soil, in front of a Chinese crowd, Song turned a fight most oddsmakers leaned the other way on into the biggest win of his life.

The scale of this matters. Nurmagomedov (20-2, 7 submissions) came in built as a grappling-first problem for the entire division, the sort of fighter you're supposed to lose points to, not get put away by. Song (24-9-1) already had ten KOs on his ledger, but finishing a fighter with Umar's defensive resume — and doing it early — is a different tier of statement.

A Bantamweight Reshuffle

The rankings now look silly if they don't move. Song was sitting at #6 and just beat the man three spots above him; a jump into the top five, if not higher, is the only honest read. Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, was being talked about as a title eliminator away from a shot — that conversation is on ice.

For Song, the next call should be a name from the top three or a title-adjacent fight. He's now beaten a wrestler who was supposed to neutralize him, which quiets the one persistent question about his ceiling. For Umar, the smart move is a rebuild bout against a fellow ranked striker to see whether the aura survived the loss.

The Co-Main Carnage

The women's strawweight co-main was arguably the biggest upset on paper. Denise Gomes, ranked #13, walked through #4 Yan Xiaonan and stopped her by elbow at 4:49 of the first round. After a rough UFC start, this is the version of Asakura that made him a star in Japan, and it should be enough to get him a ranked opponent next.

Local Prospects Cash In

The rest of the main card belonged to the finishers and the grinders. Sumudaerji took a clean sweep of the scorecards over #11 flyweight Alex Perez, a unanimous decision that lifts the unranked Chinese fighter into rankings contention and pushes the veteran Perez further down the ladder. It's the only main-card fight that went the distance, and it may be the most meaningful for the flyweight pecking order.

Light heavyweight Liu Ce (4-1) needed less than a round, stopping Levi Rodrigues Jr. with a punch at 4:26 of the first. Undefeated flyweight prospect Bilal Hasan (10-0) kept the zero intact, finishing Nilson Rojas by punch at 2:28 of the second and handing Rojas his first professional loss. Two young fighters, two clean statements.

The undercard leaned violent too. Francesco Nuzzi needed just 60 seconds to blow out veteran Xiao Long, and Julia Polastri's first-round head-kick KO of Jingnan Xiong at 3:06 was a genuine upset over a top-tier strawweight. On the mat, Rei Tsuruya (12-1) submitted Kevin Borjas by rear-naked choke in the first, while Andre Lima locked up a third-round guillotine on Namsrai Batbayar. Hector Santiago and Cam Nelson rounded out the prelim wins.

The single biggest takeaway: this card was a wrecking ball for reputations. Umar Nurmagomedov, Yan Xiaonan and Alex Perez all walked in ranked and favored, and all three walked out losers. Song Yadong's finish headlines the night, but the story is that a supposedly safe top of two divisions got exposed in front of a home crowd. The bantamweight and strawweight rankings will read very differently by morning.
