The UFC heads back to Edmonton on October 17, and the Rogers Place card is stacked with debutants. Three Contender Series graduates make their first Octagon walks Saturday, and all three arrive with Canadian ties and serious momentum. Daniel Perez (15-1) and Louis Jourdain (9-3) earned their contracts last season; bantamweight prospect Jiri Chovancek (9-0) is a quick turnaround from the Class of '26.

The show is headlined by rising welterweight Mike Malott against 10th-ranked Joaquin Buckley, with Jasmine Jasudavicius — the #7 women's flyweight at 15-4 — stepping up against #4 Erin Blanchfield (14-2). But the newcomer slate is where the long-term intrigue lives, and the UFC clearly rates these three: none of them got a soft landing.

Perez Walks Into the Fire

The 27-year-old Mexican booked his spot earlier this year with a second-round stoppage of Logan Paxton, pushing him to 15-2 with a dozen finishes. His only real setback was a third-round loss to Manoel Sousa on Contender Series Season 9 — and that result has aged well, since Sousa has since opened his UFC run 2-0 to sit at 15-1. Perez now draws Canadian veteran Kyle Nelson, who sports a 5-6-1 Octagon mark that undersells how tough he is. Nelson is 1-1 since returning to lightweight, with a strong showing against Matt Frevola before dropping a decision to Terrance McKinney.

Jourdain Makes History

Louis Jourdain's debut is more than a job interview. The 29-year-old joins his brother Charles to become the first pair of Canadian brothers to fight in the UFC. The 'Mad Prince' rides four straight wins into a 9-3 record and takes on Las Vegas striker Timmy Cuamba, a fellow Contender Series product with a touch more Octagon seasoning. Charles has said Louis is the better of the two — sibling generosity or scouting report, we'll find out fast against a quick, dangerous opponent.

Chovancek's Unbeaten Test

Chovancek, out of the same Niagara Top Team gym that built Malott and Jasudavicius, carries a spotless 9-0 record and a nasty finishing instinct — he KO'd Raphael Uchegbu 10 seconds into the third round to earn his deal. Before that he claimed and defended the Unified MMA bantamweight belt, winning the title by calf-slicer submission. His debut against SuYoung Yoo is a real step up; the South Korean won the Road to UFC Season 3 bantamweight tournament and his first two UFC bouts before getting submitted by Elijah Smith, now 10-1 and booked against Davey Grant.

Prelims kick off at 5pm ET, with the main card following at 8pm ET on Paramount+. Three debuts, all against live competition, all with Canadian stakes — this is the kind of newcomer night that tells you exactly how high the brass is on these prospects. Clear those first hurdles and the 135- and 155-pound pictures north of the border get a lot more crowded.
