Tim Kennedy, the former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight who spent years as a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier, was shot three times in the leg during an ambush in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to a Reuters report, the mid-September attack hit the team Kennedy was working with and produced 20 casualties, seven of them fatal.
Kennedy survived and is now recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. He was in the country under contract with Vectus Global, a private security and logistics firm that had reportedly signed a five-year deal worth $300-$400 million to protect mining operations in the DRC.
Who He Was Working For
Vectus Global was founded by Erik Prince, the same man behind Blackwater — the private military contractor that became a lightning rod during the Iraq War before being shut down. The company is reportedly now in talks to handle technical and logistical support for Congo's military aircraft and drones, which tells you the scope of what Kennedy signed on to.
None of this is out of character. Kennedy served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a Green Beret, so stepping into a high-risk security role in an active conflict zone fits the resume far more than it surprises anyone who followed his career.
The Fighter Behind the Soldier
Inside the cage, Kennedy built a solid reputation in the Strikeforce and UFC era. He challenged for the Strikeforce middleweight title twice and came up short both times, the kind of near-miss that defined a lot of good-not-great 185-pounders of that generation. He hung up the gloves in 2017.
There's no detailed update on his recovery timeline beyond his treatment at Walter Reed. For now, the headline is the simple one: a fighter and former soldier walked into an ambush that killed seven people and came out alive, carrying three bullets in his leg.
