Valter Walker Ties Demian Maia's Sub Record — But Names Werdum as His GOAT

Valter Walker just joined some rare company. With submission wins over Junior Tafa, Don'Tale Mayes, Kennedy Nzechukwu, Louie Sutherland and Thomas Petersen, the Brazilian heavyweight has now tapped out five opponents in a row — matching Demian Maia's 2007-2009 streak against Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen. In the modern UFC, only those two men have done it.

You'd expect a fighter who just cracked the record books to lean into the moment. Walker did the opposite after his UFC Abu Dhabi finish. He told MMA Fighting that the number doesn't interest him — it's the names attached to it. And by his measure, the heavyweight who did it best is Fabricio Werdum.

Why Werdum, Not the Streak

Walker's logic is hard to argue with. Werdum submitted Fedor Emelianenko with a triangle in Strikeforce, kimura'd Alistair Overeem in PRIDE, and tapped Cain Velasquez to win the UFC title. Roughly a third of Werdum's octagon wins came by submission, including finishes of Alexander Gustafsson, Walt Harris and Rodrigo Nogueira. Walker said matching that would be an honor, but insisted he's nowhere near it yet.

The 28-year-old was refreshingly blunt about his own run. He knows the men he's tapping don't carry big names — not yet, anyway. He framed his current stage as a work in progress, saying he expects to be a completely different fighter by 32 or 33 and that he measures himself against the very best, which for him means Werdum.

The Rankings Problem

Here's the wrinkle. Walker cracked the MMA Fighting Global Rankings before his latest win, but the UFC heavyweight ladder above him is stacked with a new generation. Ciryl Gane sits at #1 (14-2, coming off a second-round TKO of Alex Pereira), with Alexander Volkov at #2 (40-11, most recently a unanimous-decision win over Waldo Cortes Acosta). Neither carries the historical weight of a Fedor or a prime Velasquez — which is exactly Walker's point.

He argued that eras don't translate cleanly. Some of the fighters he's already submitted might become legends, he said, and only then would those wins carry real weight. For now, he doesn't see anyone in the division whose finish would put him on Werdum's plane. It's an unusually honest read from a man on a five-fight tear — and a reminder that in a rebuilding heavyweight division, legacy is still being written.
