Edgar Berlanga, one of Zuffa Boxing's highest-profile signings, has been arrested in Polk County, Florida, and charged with felony aggravated battery and a misdemeanor battery count following an alleged domestic incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at $16,000. The 29-year-old carries a 24-2 record with 19 knockouts and was fighting under the Zuffa banner as recently as this past July.
According to reports, the altercation happened while Berlanga was driving with the mother of his child. He allegedly began slapping her during a heated argument before producing a pistol and striking her in the head with it. That's the kind of detail that turns a bad night into felony paperwork.
What Allegedly Happened
The account describes the woman trying to flee the vehicle, being held back, and eventually breaking free and running to a nearby 7-Eleven, where bystanders called police. Responding officers reportedly noted swelling and bruising on her forehead that matched her version of events. She told police she did not want to press charges, but because it was classified as a domestic violence case, Berlanga was arrested at the scene regardless.
Where This Leaves Him
The timing is awkward for everyone involved. Berlanga only made his Zuffa debut in July, stopping Steven Butler to kick off what was supposed to be a fresh chapter after his two career losses. Now the promotion's marketing plans for him are frozen until the legal picture clears.
He's still best known for the loss that reshaped his ceiling — the unanimous-decision defeat to Canelo Alvarez, who himself now sits at 63-2-2 (39 KOs) after dropping his most recent bout to Terence Crawford. Berlanga's path back toward relevance at super middleweight was always going to be steep. A felony charge makes it steeper.
For now, nothing has been proven in court, and the charges are allegations. But a fighter who was supposed to be building momentum under a brand-new promotional deal is instead dealing with a booking sheet instead of a fight card. Zuffa Boxing will have to decide how long it's willing to wait.
