Kabayel's First WBC Defence Points to Nelson Hysa in Germany

Agit Kabayel is lining up the first defence of his WBC heavyweight title, and the name in the frame is Nelson Hysa. According to Dan Rafael, the unbeaten pair are set to headline a Queensberry card in Germany this November, with Kabayel putting his 27-0 record on the line against an Albanian who has stopped 23 of his 25 opponents.

That's a 90% knockout ratio for Hysa, who wasted no time reintroducing himself last month by flattening Thomas Narmo in two rounds on the Moses Itauma–Filip Hrgovic undercard. He then walked over to ringside and confronted Kabayel directly. Message received.

How Kabayel Got Here

The 33-year-old Kurdish-German has built his reputation on brutal body work. Before this title run, he closed out Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez and Zhilei Zhang in a row, each folding under shots to the ribs. Sanchez has since rebuilt, sitting at 26-1 (19 KO) after a second-round knockout of Richard Torrez, but that night belonged to Kabayel.

His path to the full belt was tidy. Kabayel returned home in January to defend his interim strap with a third-round stoppage of Damian Knyba — the same Knyba who later pulled off a surprise points win over Andy Ruiz Jr. Then in June, with Oleksandr Usyk vacating all three major belts after stopping Rico Verhoeven in the 11th, Kabayel was upgraded to undisputed WBC status.

The Names That Didn't Make It

Since the upgrade, Kabayel has been linked to several opponents, WBA champion Murat Gassiev among them. Gassiev, 34-2 (27 KO), stayed busy with a sixth-round stoppage of Peter Kadiru, but a unification with him appears to be on the back burner. Hysa looks like the more immediate assignment.

The venue tells its own story. Kabayel drew big crowds when he headlined for Frank Warren in January, and he's clearly a draw in Germany. Hysa, for his part, travels with a loyal Albanian following wherever he fights. Expect a partisan, noisy night — with two unbeaten records and a world title on the table.
