Liz Carmouche Says She Tapped Jena Bishop in Sparring, Left Her in Tears
The 26-8 veteran claims she submitted a black belt of over a decade in training — and says Bishop broke down after the loss.

Liz Carmouche isn't one to sugarcoat a gym story. The 26-8 veteran — 7 of those wins by submission — says she tapped out grappling specialist Jena Bishop during a sparring session, and that the loss hit Bishop hard enough to leave her in tears afterward.
Carmouche framed it as a challenge she actively wanted. Bishop has held a black belt since 2013, so Carmouche says she walked in expecting to get worked over on the mat and welcomed the test. Instead, by her account, the session flipped: she found the opening, locked up the submission, and the night ended with Bishop crying over the result.
A Grappler Caught on the Ground
The detail that stuck with Carmouche was the matchup on paper versus how it played out. A decade-plus black belt is exactly the kind of training partner you expect to dominate the floor. Carmouche says Bishop was dodgy about engaging at first, then came out swinging hard once she finally committed — only to get submitted in the exchange she pushed for.
Carmouche didn't hide her read on the emotional fallout, either. She suggested the tears looked like too much for someone who'd been going that aggressively, a pointed jab at the gap between intensity and composure. It's the kind of needle that lands harder coming from someone with Carmouche's résumé.
Context That Matters
Gym stories are gym stories — unverifiable, one-sided, and worth exactly what you pay for them. But Carmouche's track record gives this one some teeth. Seven submission wins across 26 victories means her ground game isn't an afterthought, and a fighter who's shared the cage with the division's best isn't reaching for credibility.
Whether this ever spills into a booking is another question entirely. For now it's a snapshot of training-room pecking order from a fighter who clearly enjoyed telling it. If Bishop wants the record corrected, the octagon is always open.
