Mike Malott Gets His Top-10 Shot: Buckley Awaits in Edmonton

Mike Malott finally gets the name he's been chasing. The UFC confirmed Tuesday that the Canadian welterweight will headline UFC Edmonton on Oct. 17 at Rogers Place against No. 10-ranked Joaquin Buckley, a fight that hands the No. 12 "Proper" his first crack at a top-10 opponent on home soil.

Malott has quietly built the résumé to justify it. Since a last-second loss to Neil Magny at UFC 297, he's reeled off four straight wins, capped by a stoppage of Gilbert Burns in April. That kind of run turns a prospect into a legitimate dark horse in one of the division's deepest classes.

Buckley's Backslide

For Buckley, the math is uglier. "New Mansa" once looked like a title contender, stacking a six-fight winning streak after returning to 170 pounds in 2023. Then the wheels wobbled: Kamaru Usman outpointed him at UFC Atlanta last summer, and Sean Brady handed him a decision loss at UFC 328 in May.

Two straight defeats at the top of the division tend to shrink a fighter's margin for error to nothing. A win over a surging, unranked-until-recently Malott keeps Buckley's name in the title conversation. A loss to a fighter four spots below him could knock him clean out of it.

That's what makes this a genuine crossroads fight rather than a mismatch on paper. Malott has momentum and a partisan crowd; Buckley has the ranking, the finishing power and the desperation of a man who knows exactly what a third straight loss would cost him.

The Co-Main Stakes

The undercard isn't filler, either. Flyweight contenders Erin Blanchfield and Jasmine Jasudavicius meet in a pivotal 125-pound co-main event, announced by Canadian broadcaster Sportsnet. The pair were originally booked for UFC 330 before a minor injury to Blanchfield forced a postponement to October.

It's a smart double-header for Edmonton: two divisional pecking-order fights with real title implications, both featuring Canadian interest. Malott carries the main-event spotlight, but the winner of Blanchfield-Jasudavicius may end up the more immediate threat to a belt.
