Michael Morales has never lost, and now he gets a belt to fight for. The 19-0 Ecuadorian co-headlines UFC 336 on January 30 against Brazil's Carlos Prates, with the interim welterweight title on the line at Toronto's Scotiabank Arena. The card is topped by Van vs Kape.

Morales brings a seven-fight UFC winning streak into the matchup, and his recent form reads like a highlight reel. His last three outings all ended by first-round TKO, and all three earned him a Performance of the Night bonus. His most recent was a R1 KO of Sean Brady by punches — a statement against a legitimate contender.

The Power Puncher Across the Cage

Prates, ranked #2 at 170, isn't the kind of opponent you ease into a title run against. The Brazilian sits at 24-7 with 19 of those wins by knockout, and he's banked seven UFC victories of his own. His last time out he stopped Jack Della Maddalena via third-round elbows. When Prates wins, he usually doesn't need the judges.

That's the clear tension here. Morales is 14 KOs deep in his own ledger, but he's also never gone the five-round distance — something to keep in mind for a title fight. Prates has, losing a decision to Ian Machado Garry over five rounds, which is the one entry on his UFC slate that didn't end in a finish.

What's Waiting for the Winner

Whoever walks out with the interim strap gets the real prize down the line. Champion Islam Makhachev (29-1) is slated to unify against the UFC 336 winner at a later date. Makhachev's own path to welterweight supremacy ran through a decision win over Ian Machado Garry — the same fighter who handed Prates his only Octagon loss.

Two finishers, one undefeated record, and a champion watching from the top of the division. Morales has looked untouchable, but he's never been dragged into deep water, and Prates is exactly the guy who can make the pool feel bottomless. January 30 answers the question.
