Ngannou Fires Back at Dana White: 'You Have to Take That Loss'

The Francis Ngannou–Dana White cold war just got warm again. This week White reopened the wound by branding the former heavyweight champion a "bad guy" and saying he has no interest in doing business with bad guys. Ngannou didn't let it sit, hitting social media Friday with a reply that reframed the whole thing: this is the same man he spent more than three years and serious legal money trying to escape, he said, while White worked to keep him locked in.

The context matters. Ngannou walked out of the UFC in 2023 as the reigning heavyweight king, fighting out his contract and refusing to sign a renewal after the two sides couldn't agree on terms. White has long insisted the offer was enormous — the promotion, by his telling, put a deal on the table that would have made Ngannou the best-paid heavyweight in company history, ahead of Brock Lesnar and everyone else. Ngannou passed, and White's stance since has been simple: if you don't want to be here, you don't have to be.

The Divorce That Won't End

The messy part is that both men keep circling back to it. Every few months one of them throws a jab, the other counters, and the story reignites without either side landing anything decisive. Ngannou's latest post is basically a shrug in text form — a rejection of the idea that he owes the UFC anything, and a reminder that leaving cost him real money and years of planning.

Since the exit, Ngannou hasn't exactly gone quiet. He nearly upset Tyson Fury in his boxing debut before Anthony Joshua stopped him in 2024. Joshua, now 29-4 with 26 knockouts, has kept rolling himself, most recently scoring a sixth-round KO of Jake Paul. Ngannou then went back to MMA under the PFL banner, stopping Renan Ferreira and, in May, knocking out Philipe Lins on the MVP card headlined by Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano.

So the résumé since the split reads: a near-miss against a lineal boxing champion, a loss to an Olympic gold medalist, and two MMA finishes. Not a bad run for a man White wants everyone to believe made a mistake by leaving.

What's clear is that neither side is done talking. The financial argument White keeps making — record heavyweight money turned down — runs straight into Ngannou's counter that no paycheck was worth staying under a promotion he says fought to keep him tied down. Two versions of the same divorce, and both men are sticking to their story.
