Ryan Garcia is shopping for his next opponent, and the name drawing all the noise is a 49-year-old who hasn't fought a real pro bout in years. Floyd Mayweather, owner of the untouched 50-0 ledger, has been floated as a challenger for Garcia's WBC welterweight title — and trainer Robert Garcia says that if the fight somehow happens, he'd pick the champion to hand Mayweather his first loss.

The context matters. 'King Ry' (25-2, 20 KO) just blitzed Conor Benn inside two rounds last month, dropping the Brit with a right hand before referee Thomas Taylor waved it off. That dropped Benn to 25-1 (14 KO) and reset Garcia's momentum at exactly the right time.

Robert Garcia's Verdict

The respected coach doesn't think the Mayweather bout is real in the first place. But pressed on a hypothetical, he said Ryan would win — citing Mayweather's long layoff and his age. Robert Garcia was blunt about the generational gap, too: in his prime, he admitted, Floyd would have given the young Californian no chance at all. Right now? Different story.

He's not wrong to be skeptical. A Garcia-Mayweather fight is spectacle, not sport — a chance to say you shared a ring with a legend more than a genuine championship test. Mayweather's inactivity is the whole point. The last time he threw hands that mattered is ancient history in boxing terms.

The Real Options

The more serious names on Garcia's radar are WBA welterweight champ Teofimo Lopez and Isaac 'Pitbull' Cruz. Lopez (22-2, 13 KO) is coming off a decision loss to Shakur Stevenson and has lodged an appeal with the WBA to sidestep mandatory challenger Jack Catterall, which would clear the runway for a Garcia showdown. Catterall, ranked #9 at 33-2 (14 KO), is the man standing in the way.

Garcia wants a fast turnaround after that Benn blowout, floating December or January for a third outing in 2026 — a schedule that could nudge him into Fighter of the Year talk. First, though, everyone's waiting on the WBA's ruling. Until that lands, the Mayweather chatter is just that: chatter.
