Robert Garcia Says Jaron Ennis Is Dodging Vergil Ortiz Jr at 154

Jaron Ennis went two-for-two on world titles in June, ripping the WBO and WBA straps from Xander Zayas with a seventh-round stoppage to move to 36-0 (32 KO). Now Robert Garcia says the 29-year-old is using that unified status as cover to avoid the one fight the division actually wants: Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr.

Garcia's argument, delivered to Fight Hub TV, is blunt. He says Boots and promoter Eddie Hearn are chasing belt-consolidation as an excuse, and that the Ortiz clash is the biggest fight at 154 whether or not a title is on the line. Ortiz hasn't boxed since stopping Erickson Lubin in two rounds last November, and reports now suggest he may jump to middleweight for lack of a marquee dance partner at super-welter.

How We Got Here

The two Americans were deep in talks earlier this year before Ortiz got tangled in a legal dispute with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy. Garcia says that once the mess cleared, he pushed hard to revive the fight — his stated advice every time he was asked was to go straight at Boots. Instead, he claims, Team Ennis changed course and pivoted toward unification.

That pivot points at Josh Kelly. The IBF champion (18-1-1, 9 KO) is a fellow Matchroom fighter, which makes a same-stable, all-belts-on-the-line bout the path of least resistance. Kelly took the strap from Bakhram Murtazaliev on a majority decision in January, then survived a hard-fought defence against Caoimhin Agyarko last month. Logical on paper. Just not the fight Garcia — or a lot of fans — had circled.

The Division Math

Ennis has said he wants to face his fellow belt-holders, and there's a queue. Sebastian Fundora (24-1-1, 15 KO) holds the WBC and defends against mandatory Ermal Hadribeaj on October 17, so he's spoken for. That leaves Kelly as the cleanest unification target this year — convenient, given both men share a promoter.

Here's the tension Garcia is poking at: a championship isn't a prerequisite for a big fight, and Ortiz doesn't hold a belt to make it one. So if unification is the priority, Ortiz gets frozen out by design. Whether that's smart matchmaking or ducking depends on which side of the negotiation you're standing on. Garcia's already made his call.
