Uros Medic Headlines UFC Belgrade as Serbia Hosts First Card

The UFC lands in Serbia for the first time Saturday, and there's exactly one reason it's happening: Uros Medic asked for it. The Belgrade welterweight lobbied Dana White directly to bring the promotion to the Balkans, and not only did White say yes — he handed Medic the main event. Medic headlines against Daniel Rodriguez (20-5, 9 KO, 4 SUB), the #15-ranked veteran who just outpointed Kevin Holland by unanimous decision.

The card runs Aug. 1 on Paramount+, with the eight-fight prelims kicking off at 10 a.m. ET and the six-fight main card at 1 p.m. ET. It's stacked with debuts and home-country favorites rather than marquee names, which is fine — this one's for the Belgrade Arena crowd, and they'll have plenty to scream about. It's also the latest stop in a brutal run of 16 consecutive weekends of UFC events.

Medic has turned every fight into a coin flip, and he's fine with that. That left hand keeps landing, and he keeps throwing it. Rodriguez is the opposite animal — a patient southpaw who controls distance, gathers data, and waits for opponents to break their own discipline. He's frustrated aggressive strikers before by refusing to trade recklessly. The question is whether Medic's power can crack that patience before Medic's own suspect chin gets exposed on the counter.

The Blachowicz Wildcard

Former light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz brings the only real star power to the lineup, and at 43 he remains one of the sport's stubbornest underdogs — a man who's ruined more parlays over the last decade than almost anyone on the roster. He draws short-notice replacement Navajo Stirling, a teammate of champion Carlos Ulberg (15-1) who's still raw and finding himself in the octagon.

Stirling stepped in under three weeks out, after Bogdan Guskov (18-4-1) was pulled to replace Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC Abu Dhabi. Preparing for a fighter as awkward and durable as Blachowicz on that little notice is a nightmare, and it stacks the odds further against the newcomer. Blachowicz is a genuine step up in class.

Rakic Goes Heavyweight

Aleksandar Rakic (14-6, 9 KO) makes his heavyweight debut against veteran Marcin Tybura, and the timing is curious — light heavyweight may be the weakest men's division going, yet Rakic is bulking up rather than dropping down. He's coming off a first-round KO loss to Azamat Murzakanov, so a reset makes sense. Tybura is a bad welcome, though: a grinding wrestler who's leaned harder on takedowns as his career has stretched on, and the kind of durable, smart opponent who can drag a striker into deep, ugly water for three rounds.
