Chael Sonnen Says a Vegas Security Guard Cashed In a Favor for an MMA Debut

Chael Sonnen says a chance encounter in a Las Vegas casino turned a security guard into a debuting MMA fighter, with a bout now set for September 5 in Oregon. The former two-division UFC title challenger, who filmed The Ultimate Fighter at UFC APEX earlier this year, laid out the whole thing on his YouTube channel — so treat it with the appropriate skepticism, because Sonnen has never been shy about a good story.

Here's the version he's telling. A guard named Frank Solomon helped Sonnen and his son find a bathroom. Sonnen tossed out a throwaway "I owe you one," and roughly three minutes later Solomon came back to collect. His ask wasn't small: he wanted a sit-down with Dana White and a UFC fight. Solomon's resume, per Sonnen, was high school wrestling and some track — no pro record, no amateur record, just size and nerve.

The 'Stooge Test'

Sonnen wasn't about to march a stranger into White's office, and he said as much. Instead he floated a counteroffer he calls his "stooge test": was Solomon willing to start at the bottom, or did he only want the shortcut? Sonnen said Solomon passed, insisting he'd take any fight to prove a point — that you don't have to be doing this since age 10 to give it a go. He even offered to pay to compete, which Sonnen said he'd never allow, but he respected the hunger behind it.

So Sonnen made a call. He rang Kevin Keeney, who runs Oregon's Full Contact Fighting Federation — the same regional circuit Sonnen himself came up through, and one that's produced a handful of eventual UFC fighters. Within minutes, Sonnen says, Solomon had filled out the application online and landed a fight. Sonnen says he plans to be cageside in September to watch it play out.

Whether every beat of this is literally true almost doesn't matter — it's a clean bit of Sonnen mythmaking, and it lands because the underlying pitch (earn your access) is one he genuinely lives by. If Solomon actually walks out on September 5, the guy went from pointing at a restroom to a sanctioned MMA debut in the space of a single conversation.

The wider slate is a lot more concrete. Sonnen's old promotion, meanwhile, keeps churning names, and the fall calendar is stacked around it: Salahdine Parnasse (23-2) headlines UFC Paris opposite Dan Hooker (24-14), while UFC 331 on September 19 features Renato Moicano against Brian Ortega (16-5, eight of those wins by submission). Elsewhere, Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KO) climbed off the canvas twice to beat Kristian Prenga. Solomon won't headline any of that. But if the story holds, he's on a fight card — which is more than most bathroom directions ever get you.
