David Martinez Welcomes Dan Ige to 135 With a Promise to Brawl

David Martinez isn't waiting around for permission. The Mexican bantamweight sits at 14-1 with a 10-fight win streak, and on Saturday at Noche UFC in Glendale, Arizona, he gets to prove he belongs among the division's best against a genuine test: former featherweight contender Dan Ige, who's dropping to 135 pounds for the first time in his UFC career.

It's a smart booking for both. Martinez has stacked back-to-back unanimous decisions over veterans Rob Font and Marlon Vera to climb into the conversation at bantamweight. Ige, meanwhile, brings a 19-11 record (7 KO, 5 SUB) and years of sharing the cage with the best featherweights on the roster. Martinez told UFC.com he considers it an honor to face a fighter with that much company time and that kind of resume.

A New Division for Ige

Martinez was polite about welcoming Ige down a weight class, but the message was pointed. He noted that bantamweight is a different animal — different people, different skills — and that whatever Ige built at 145 doesn't automatically carry over. Ige is used to fighting bigger, stronger opposition; now he's the one making the cut, and coming off a first-round KO loss to Melquizael Costa via spinning back kick in his last outing.

The scouting report cuts both ways. Martinez knows Ige presses forward, throws heavy hands and can finish with strikes or submissions. He's fine with that. Martinez said he likes to trade, likes to stay in what he called the fire zone, and he plans to plant his feet and swing. He's chasing knockout number 11 and made clear he won't dance around Ige to get it.

Still Learning at the Top

It's easy to forget Martinez has only fought three times in the UFC. He's still refining his game at the highest level, and he said the Font and Vera fights taught him plenty — both were different puzzles that sharpened his prep for this one. That combination of a spotless streak and limited big-league mileage makes him one of the more intriguing prospects at 135.

The endgame is gold. Martinez figures he's maybe one or two wins from a title shot, though he's not fixating on the math. His focus, he said, is entirely on Saturday and getting his hand raised.
