The Global Fight League, the big-talk promotion that signed a pile of former UFC champions in 2025 and then failed to stage a single event, finally has a date on the calendar. The GFL will debut Dec. 18 at Club Atletico Lanus in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with its new Buenos Aires Gauchos team facing off against the Miami Monsters.

The league has started rolling out the Gauchos roster, with more names and the full Monsters lineup still to come. It's a modest start for an outfit that spent last year promising huge athlete pay and loading up on recognizable veterans before its planned May 24-25, 2025 shows collapsed and never happened.

The Moraes Catch

One early wrinkle: former UFC bantamweight title challenger Marlon Moraes was recently added to the Miami roster, but sources have indicated he won't actually compete on the Dec. 18 card. So one of the bigger names tied to the Monsters is already off the opener before the fights are even booked.

The team-vs-team format is still a question mark. The GFL has published a scoring system for future events but hasn't spelled out exactly how the Gauchos and Monsters will square off, or how team points translate into a result.

A Credibility Problem

The reason skepticism is warranted is simple: the GFL has made noise before and delivered nothing. Its 2025 pitch leaned on former UFC titleholders Tyron Woodley, Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold, Anthony Pettis and Holly Holm. On paper that's a stacked rolodex. On the scoreboard, it's zero events run.

Those names also underline how far removed this project is from the sport's current top tier. Weidman, a former middleweight king, sits at 16-8 and was stopped by Eryk Anders in his last outing. Holm, 15-7, dropped her most recent fight to Kayla Harrison by second-round rear-naked choke. These are legacy draws, not contenders — which is fine for a startup league, as long as it actually puts on a show this time.

For now, Dec. 18 is the first real test. The GFL has talked a big game for the better part of a year. Buenos Aires is where it either backs it up or becomes another cautionary tale in MMA's startup graveyard.
