Thad Jean Wants Two PFL Belts — and He's Already Naming Names Before Washington

Thad Jean headlines PFL Washington DC on Saturday night at CareFirst Arena with the vacant welterweight title on the line — and he's treating it as step one of a two-belt plan. The 2025 PFL tournament winner at 170 pounds, who beat Jason Jackson and Logan Storley back-to-back to claim last season's crown, has made it plain he intends to add the middleweight strap before his career is done.

There's a wrinkle, though. Jean was supposed to fight Shamil Musaev, but weight-cut complications forced the Russian out late, and Ernesto Rodriguez stepped in on short notice. Jean, for his part, never thought Musaev deserved the shot anyway — he pointed out that Musaev lost a title fight to Ramazan Kuramagomedov in his last outing.

Jean is coming off the longest layoff of his career, and he insists it was time well spent. He told MMA Fighting he used the break to patch the holes exposed during the tournament run, claiming he's jumped two levels — a boast, he admits, that only Saturday's performance can verify.

Conqueror, Not King

His coach, Daniel Mendes, believes Jean's 2025 run painted a target on his back. Jean rejects the framing entirely. He'd rather be the conqueror than the hunted king, invoking Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great as the models — go take territory, don't sit on a throne waiting for challengers. Subtle, he is not.

He's equally blunt about the state of PFL's welterweight division, which he concedes looks thin. He ran through the contenders: Umalatov got knocked out by Musaev, Abdoul 'Lazy King' Abdouraguimov is barely willing to face his teammate Kendly St. Louis, and Patrick Habirora keeps calling out faded legends — behavior Jean dismissed as WWE-style entertainment rather than fighting. His preferred path is chasing names with fanbases instead of contenders with claims, and he ranked Cedric Doumbe as the biggest name available, ahead of Habirora and Umalatov.

Eyeing 185 Pounds

Then there's the 185-pound picture, which just got more interesting. Johnny Eblen knocked out Impa Kasanganay last weekend to win the interim middleweight title and is expected to unify against champion Costello van Steenis later this year. Jean says he'd handle Eblen the way he handled Storley — refuse to let the wrestler dictate, apply his own pressure, and force a striking match. He noted what happened the first time Kasanganay made Eblen strike, and said he sees himself beating Eblen, Kasanganay and van Steenis alike.

The long-term blueprint: win Saturday, restore some normalcy to the welterweight division by actually defending the belt, then move up for the middleweight title while he can still make 170 — holding and defending both. Jean says he'll eventually settle at middleweight full-time, but the double-champ status comes first. He knows how it sounds. He says he doesn't care, and that he'll make it happen regardless. First, Rodriguez has to be dealt with.
