Ortega Injury Scraps UFC 331 Bout; Moicano Lands Oct. 31 Main Event

Brian Ortega's return is off. The former featherweight title challenger, 16-5 with eight of his wins by submission, has withdrawn from Saturday's UFC 331 in Los Angeles with an undisclosed injury, wiping his lightweight meeting with Renato Moicano off the card entirely.

Moicano isn't left waiting around, though. Instead of scrambling for a short-notice replacement in LA, the Brazilian gets bumped to a new assignment: a main-event slot against rising lightweight Tom Nolan on Oct. 31 at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. That's a promotion, not a demotion — going from a supporting spot to top billing on a Fight Night.

The ripple effect trims UFC 331 down to 12 total fights. With Moicano-Ortega gone, the heavyweight matchup between Gable Steveson and Sean Sharaf now kicks off the main card on Saturday night.

What It Means for Moicano

Moicano's been in decent form and rides the momentum of a rear-naked choke over Chris Duncan back in April — a finish that was pure Moicano, hunting the neck the moment the fight hit the mat. Facing Nolan gives him a live, younger contender rather than the comeback story Ortega would've been. On paper it's a more dangerous stylistic test, but it's also a chance to headline and stay busy while the lightweight logjam sorts itself out.

Ortega, meanwhile, badly needed a win. He's coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Aljamain Sterling and sits at #11 in the featherweight rankings, so this lightweight experiment was already a bit of a reset. Another layoff isn't ideal for a 16-5 veteran whose ceiling depends on activity.

The headline act at UFC 331 remains untouched. Joshua Van defends his flyweight belt against former champ Alexandre Pantoja in a rematch, with Pantoja — 30-6 and ranked #1 — chasing revenge after Van stopped him inside a round. Arman Tsarukyan, the #2 lightweight at 23-3, still features in the co-main against Mauricio Ruffy. So the top of the card is intact; it's just leaner underneath.
